Toyota developing 'world's most efficient hybrid' vehicle

The China Post -- Toyota Motor Corp. is developing a small hybrid car that can travel 60 kilometers per liter of gasoline, which would make it the world's most fuel-efficient hybrid, it has been learned.
The next-generation vehicle combines a one-liter gasoline engine and an electric motor smaller than that fitted in the current Prius model, according to Toyota officials.

The automaker is trying to reduce the body weight and air resistance of the vehicle, which could go on the market from the latter half of the 2010s.

At the Geneva International Motor Show last month, Toyota unveiled a prototype of its next-generation hybrid line currently under development.
The automaker hopes the new vehicle's high fuel efficiency will considerably boost Toyota's share in the domestic market.

It's got an engine, a battery, a seat, some wheels, and not much else.

Hopefully it will run on natural gas, although with this type of performance, it won't make a big difference on fuel cost, but with a consumption of 60km/L=1.6L/100km=141mpg, the gas will probably go stale and clog up the injectors before it gets burned...

Detroit will probably need an equivalent model in their future product lines to meet fuel economy targets.

Not even CLOSE! 60km/L = 37.28 miles x 3.785 = 141 US mpg. Volkswagen has prototype 1 litre displacement turboDIESEL-electric hybrid that get over 1.5 times that, as in 235 miles per US gallon. However in a real-life car, expect the more usual diesel over gasoline advantage of 25-40%.

The greatest mystery on earth is why Toyota, which makes incredibly fine diesels for sale worldwide except USA/Canada, has not done a Prius with a clean diesel as the engine part of the drive train. Or why VW has not released any of their hybrid diesels anywhere.

The now long discontinued VW Lupo diesel (a 4 seater) averaged about 78 US mpg in a non-hybrid format, although an around the world test (a la Jules Verne's Around the World in 80 days) got about 100 US mpg. imagine that in a hybrid.

FYI, 60 Km/L = about 140 MPG or so, I think. That's a lot. I'll take one.

while the mileage is impressive, i hope they do something about the looks. the front looks like it already hit something.

Toyota FT-Bh Concept

the prius c had some drastic looks in development, but changed quite a bit before being released.

Well done, but still a very toxic process for making and disposing of batteries. Is anyone doing anything about that?

If we save too much fuel the price will go up to compensate the extra mpg like it has in the past. Remember, big gov will not go for lower taxes per gallon.

Hardly better than my 2010 Corolla that gets 5.7 litres/ 100 km highway. 50 MPG.

I think there is a market for Hybrids for people willing to give up gas guzzlers from the 1980's but not for me.

i see gas eyes has already done the conversion.

that would be great mileage. what would the oil companies do to prevent such a vehicle from being sold here?

60 KM/liter equals about 142 mpg. That's impressive.
