Oil falls to near $53 as OPEC doesn't cut output
Monday, December 01, 2008
USA Today -- SINGAPORE (AP) — Oil prices fell to near $53 a barrel Monday in Asia after OPEC declined to cut production at an informal meeting in Cairo on Saturday.

Light, sweet crude for January delivery was down $1.07 to $53.36 a barrel, after falling to as low as $52.96, in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange at mid-afternoon in Singapore. The contract settled down a penny at $54.43 on Friday.

Saudi Oil Minister Ali Naimi said Saturday that the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries will "do what needs to be done" to shore up falling oil prices when the group meets Dec. 17 in Algeria, but for now it was "too early."

Today's problem is not the supply side but the demand side. They know perfectly well production cut won't get them more $s.

This site is slow and sluggish today. Must be because of all the OLD news. Oil was under $50 yesterday.

Oil is below $50.

Enjoy it while it lasts, wear your SUV out, and then replace it with a gas sipper. It may only be $1.75 gallon for gas, but if you use half as much gas, you are still saving half of your gas expence. So it's always cheaper to conserve.

They were making money when it was $25 do they are still making double what they were just a couple of years ago. They know that if it doesn't stay low then the world wide depression will happen and they will not keep selling oil. Alternative fuel will take over so much faster when they push the price up.

I think the Saudi's know that if they cut production now when we are hurting they may shoot themselves in the foot. I just hope we don't stop trying to find other alternatives. It seems like everytime the price drops we stop exploring other energy sources.

The Saudis are still making money even at these lower prices so they aren't going to stop pumping. Many of the other producers don't care about the worlds economy, they just want to get more money fer their oil regardless of the consequences.

The Arabs losing a millions over months is like me losing the pocket change in my pants...hardley noticable and easy to get over. It's nice to see they're not as greedy as I had thought.

What else (beside petroleum) does Saudi Arabia or Iran have available for export? Maybe they can rely on that to pull them through these lean times.

This is a surprising move by OPEC. Although, I can see why they would hold off on cutting production. If there were a sudden spike in demand everyone would be targeting them again like this summer.

The pendulum is swinging the other way and OPEC can't stop what it helped create. Expensive oil attracts investment in production which eventually creates cheap oil.

Even if OPEC "agrees" to further production cuts, how long will it be before one or more countries "cheat" - as they have done in the past when OPEC cut production to raise price?

I think oil should be removed from the commodities market and let true market economics set its price! Then it would be in the US$40's/barrel.

their whole economy is based on oil sales. If they cut production, they will sell less thereby making less money. so a few pennies are better than none.
