How much cheaper is US hybrid and EV manufacturing?

electriccarblogging.com -- In order for plug-in and hybrid cars to mainstream, prices need to decline. Both Toyota and Nissan have suggested that prices of their hybrid and electric cars would be cheaper if made in the US, rather than in Japan.

But how much cheaper?

Next year Nissan Leaf production will begin in the US. What kind of impact will that have on prices? To date, Leaf prices have been increasing, not declining. And as Nissan upgrades the Leaf interior, won’t that also push prices higher?

Similarly, Toyota continues to eye US production of the Prius, a move the company claims would also lower Prius prices. So, what’s the holdup? And just how much cheaper would US production make the Prius?

Next year, US Nissan Leaf production should start providing some answers. I, for one, am very interested in findin

I'd love to see more manufacturing in the States and if prices do drop, I would get one!

Hybrids and EVs prices are still too high even with the $7500 tax rebate.

The Toyota Pruis can be purchased under $20k same with the Honda Insight..
but the Chevy Volt is nearly $40k and the Nissan Leaf is over $35k

(so not only does the Volt suffer from being an unreliable GM product, they are also painfully overpriced)
Even the leaf suffers from a hefty price tag..

Still there are options with the Prius & Insight.

Now gas mileage..
The Prius C gets 53/46
The Insight 44/41

While the Leaf gets 106/92 and the Volt shows 95/93
Again the Volt loses here.. since the Leaf is less expensive and gets better mpg.

Still have to weigh the reality can you afford a $40k vehicle to save at the pump?
Figure if you drive 10k miles a year and you have a vehicle that gets 50mpg that is 200gal a year x $4 gal = $800 year in gas.
If you have a 100 mpg vehicle also considering 10k miles a year that would be $400 year in gas..
It would take 50 years to compensate for that $20k higher price tag

Again the Volt does not make sense.. nor does the Leaf. Plus the anemic driving, and the number of recharges required you would never get far anyhow

Really thinking about a vehicle that only has a range of 20miles.. seems like this is encouragement towards the ultimate "green" energy travel alternative.. bicycles.

THis states, that prices for Hybrids need to decline, or you can use O'Bamas method, increase the price of fossil fuels to make the hybrids more economically appealing. I think his method SUCKS

Hybrids and EV's only comprise about 2.5% of total sales in cars. They need to make the battery cheaper, it they are to significantly reduce the price and boost sales.
