Energy costs, jet fuel drop combine to close refinery

The News Tribune -- FAIRBANKS -- Decreased jet fuel sales in Anchorage were a secondary factor into the decision to shut down a crude oil refining unit at the North Pole Refinery, which will cost 35 to 40 jobs, according to a spokesman for refinery owner Flint Hills Resources.

Jeff Cook told the Fairbanks Daily News Miner that competitors are able to sell jet fuel cheaper to Ted Stevens Anchorage International Airport because it costs them less to produce it.

"We cannot economically compete with refiners who can bring jet fuel into Anchorage refined at other locations with a) cheaper crude, and b) cheaper energy," Cook said.

Besides the job loss, the decision will affect the Alaska Railroad, a spokeswoman said.

Flint Hills sent 36,000 tank cars filled with 800 million gallons of product to Anchorage in it

sadly, Alaskans can't afford buying fuel to fly, which there is like buying gas for your car. With few roads, flying is the only transportation unless one counts a several day long sledding expedition to the nearest food seller.

HI: you're right about the problem of competition. However, I found lots of stuff was a lot costlier than on the mainland, but even locally produced items were more costly.

The same problem exists in Hawai'i with milk and eggs. There is something very wrong when a product can be shipped 2000 miles and STILL compete favorably with locally grown products.

Its a vicious circle & it matters not from what source we get our energy; Unless you generate your own Energy from home. The less we use the more per KWH or $/Gal they charge & the less they pump, refine or the more they Export. We can't beat the system unless Gov intervenes as is their responsibility in these cases. They have to plug the holes in the system. Stop Speculators; Stop export of US energy sources, unless we have a true surplus without importing any petroleum products from OPEC. Also increase pumping oil Including Shale.

Refineries that run on natural gas pay around $2 per million British thermal units. Flint Hills pays $20 to $21 per million Btu because it does not have an inexpensive and ready supply of natural gas and must instead burn oil, Cook said.

Maybe they need Solar and wind on their roofs???

Seriously DEG, how much more hands-off do you want the government to be? How exactly is the government impeding the oil companies? The government is already in Big Oil's pocket.
