Coal, Renewable Energy's Dirty Step Child

Oilprice.com -- The war on coal is environmentally sound but the lack of subtlety in getting rid of this dirty energy step child is destructive and natural gas would eventually triumph over coal without hard-hitting regulations.

The reasoning is that natural gas results in around 50% of the carbon dioxide emissions for the same amount of electricity produced by coal. The catch is that in order for a coal plant to meet this carbon dioxide emissions level it must actually burn more coal to allow for the process of diverting its carbon dioxide emissions. This is how the war on coal is being played out – and the regulations are meant to ensure that no new coal plants can be built.

From the article:

"Opposition from the Senate’s Democratic majority ensured that it wouldn’t come to that: only five Democratic senators supported the resolution, including Senator Joe Manchin III of West Virginia.

West Virginia’s other senator, Jay Rockefeller, also a Democrat, voted against the measure, saying it “moves us backward, not forward.”

========================================================

Perhaps the citizens of West Virginia should consider this when Sen. Rockefeller come seeking their votes for his re-election. This is the SAME Jay Rockefeller who sponsored legislation to REGULATE THE INTERNET. Imagine. The MSM is already dominated by the left and Sen. Rockefeller wants the Internet, too! Get rid of him West Virginia.

EPA estimates compliance will annually cost the industry $9.6 billion and
provide health benefits of at least $37 billion

However, independent research shows that the Utility MACT Rule’s compliance
costs will be $9.6 billion per year, while the direct health benefits will
range from $0.5 to 6 million per year. This yields a cost-to-benefits ratio
ranging from 19,200 to 1 up to 1,600 to 1.

The amount of Mercury in the atmosphere has been in steep decline for many
years. The largest sources of Mercury in the USA is from the oceans.

We need affordable and practical alternatives first. Natural Gas is good, but need to be able to get it safely without affecting our water supplies and then need to make it readily available for people to use in their cars.

Japan is using coal as their #1 energy source since they chose to shut down their ample nuclear power supply. Maybe they are buying our 'to dirty to use' coal.
You see, coal is being burned around the world, it's just us who can't use it.
If Obozo is worried about sucking soot down his windpipe then he can outlaw coal exports, for the environment don't you know.

If coal can be clean and cost effective, use it.

It will cost us all in a few years. Don't believe everything you read people. When demand for natural gas goes back up we will wonder why we switched off something we have so much of.
