Of course they are.Diesel is the short term solution...maybe even the medium term solution. The long term solution might be CNG.

I think that the Toyota Prius technology, with the self charging battery, is the only type of hybrid that I would consider. Especially given that I live with PG&E (Pacific Gas & Electric). They run their company like they are inebriated adolescents.

You probably don't save money in the long run with a hybrid. But it is kinda cool and maybe better for the environment than the non-hybrid version.

What isn't being overhyped these days? One overhype to solve another overhype in this case.

IMO the hybrid are way over hyped. I think they are an intermediate technology trying to fill the gap to whatever will be the best answer. The combined technology of engine and motor is just too complicated, and expensive to pencil out in most cases.

Hybrids are over priced when the battery replacement cost in 2-4 years is greater then perceived fuel savings during that time, its a start, but work needs to be done...

Hybrids only run on batteries if you drive like a senior citizen. If you drive like you have someplace to be, the gasoline engine will stay on, so bye-bye gas savings.

More often than not when I'm stuck in unnecessarily slow traffic, there is a Prius holding up traffic. Congrats on your purchase...now get out of the way because we all have places to be.
