Driving on cloud nine: All-electric Focus is slapped with official EPA 105 MPGe rating Read more: h

Digital Trends -- With an EPA-certified 105 MPGe, Ford will undoubtedly be driving (not riding) on cloud nine. With the latest figures in, the American automaker is wasting no time bringing the fight to its closest competitor -- Nissan's Leaf.
Ford has come out swinging in the battle to be the most “fuel-efficient” car in the country. The American automaker — hot off the heels of an EPA certified 105 miles per gallon equivalent rating for its soon-to-be released Focus Electric – will be truly elated with the EPA’s recent fuel efficiency certification.
The EPA’s findings actually best the Blue Oval’s own estimate by 5 miles when the company stated back in December that the all-electric Focus would be able to get about 100 MPGe.
Of course Ford is not wasting any timeRead more: http://www.digitaltrends.com/

Is this E.P.A. MPGe rating for a plug in only or is this car equipped with a gasoline powered generator?

suzmar said, "I doubt this EPA rating is any more accurate than other ratings that they issue."

Actually, the mileage sticker you see on the window has become a lot more accurate in recent years. Before that, the EPA mileage estimate had become just a mathematical formula extrapolated out from a standard testing program that basically drove the car like your grandmother. No jackrabbit starts and no air conditioning. The new test program actual shows the range of mileage you get if you drive very conservatively to driving with a lead foot.

For those that are skeptical, just use the lower number on the sticker. It's there in the small print.

To all those complaining about the price, it will come down and come down quickly as more cars are sold. Battery technology is getting better all the time. The first automaker that invents the iPod of electric vehicles is going to become very, VERY rich.

To answer Lukus' question, I'm gonna assume that the battery is guaranteed for 10 years or 150,000 miles. That seems to be the benchmark for battery technology. Anything less than that and you would see thousands and thousands of complaints flooding message boards all over the Internet.

For multicar families, one could be electric, if the price was $15,000 lower.

Real competition will breed progressively better electrics, eventually driving up the range and making them more practical.

Not happening very fast, but happening.

"slapped" connotes negativity. This headline isn't very meaningful. It just gets you to read something thinking there's going to be blame passed around, etc.

I am a Ford fan but if it doesn't use gas or diesel it should not be rated in mpg. Electrics should have a electricity usage to charge per mile it will go such as "kilowatt per mile" or kpm.

While this is not for me, I'm glad to see them continue to develop this technology. At some point this may become cost effective. I could see these as certain fleet vehicles.
