Ethanol oversupply impact on Nebraska

nebraskaradionetwork.com -- March 14, 2012

Rising fuel prices is causing drivers to put the brakes on unnecessary trips. That is also having an impact on ethanol production in Nebraska. Troy Gavin with Midwest Renewable Energy is the general manager of ethanol plant near Sutherland and he tells us that is one reason but there is more to it than that. He says there were problems on the horizon when VEETC (Volumetric Ethanol Excise Tax Credit) expired in 2011. He says that created an oversupply in storage as ethanol was bought before that tax credit ended. He says they knew that would create an oversupply in storage and they are trying to work through that supply-demand imbalance.

Gavin says tanks are

With high and steadily increasing pump prices, average drivers have reduced consumption to make ends meet without any government help. Ethanol-gasoline blenders must either learn to make it without government subsidies or get out of the business of producing a product many drivers don't want.

Until a better, affordable alternative is found, Ethanol is the best option we have to gaining energy independance. Just look at the millions of out tax dollars that obama has thrown down the rat hole trying to fund all the alternatives. Like it was mentioned earlier, the market will dictate where this all goes. Keep the government and politics out of it. Every time they get involed, it ends up bad.

Get rid of ethanol, it does little good for anyone save for the farmers that grow the corn! That along with the politicians that I'm sure are lining their pockets.

Gee, poor Nebraska! You and the other grain states got Congress and the EPA to mandate ethanol in our cars without our consent and subsidized your ethanol industry with our tax dollars (again without consent), which decreased our fuel mileage (because ethanol doesn't have as much energy per gallon as gasoline), increased food prices and did nothing to lower the cost of fuel at the pump.

Are we supposed to feel sorry for Nebraska. I'd shed some crocodile tears but I think it's only fair that the grain-states provide me with a subsidy first.

The corn farmers need to ween themselves off of the Federal subsidy trough that kept them eating high on the hog (pun intended) for the last 30 years with the $.45 cents per gallon of ethanol subsidy that ended 1/1/2012.

Corn is for feeding people and animals, not ethanol.

They were greedy buy taking government money before the tax credit was dropped and storing an over supply and now they are crying because tax payers were not happy with food for fuel program. I guess they will be asking for help to get tax payer cash in other ways.
