"but by no means should it be moved to JFF."
Then where because it doesn't belong here.

Since the thread in question was not recent, it doesn't surprise me that the offender(s) had been forcibly removed. And since it's a non-current thread in the JFF category, it's already effectively dead -- there's no point in taking any further action about it.
As for *this* thread, it was originally an issue about anomalous site behavior, though the details of the anomaly turned out to be incomplete. If there's nothing more to say about it, then we can stop discussing it and let this topic sink -- but by no means should it be moved to JFF.

I followed maxstar's link and note that we will not be seeing any more posts from the gbs listed in GasBuddy's post:

A string of hypens, for example, could be used as a separator between parts of a posting. Not knowing the rule, I did that only to find a few days later that what I had posted was "text deleted". Knowing the rule would have prevented that. Hence I published it. Just tuck it away in that part of your brain where you have saved "never put your elbow in your ear."
maxstar: That LOL post doesn't fit the rule, because it holds only for strings of over 79 chars that have no spaces in them. kwzh is right; the rule does not require repeated characters; any string whatsoever exceeding 79 that does not have embedded spaces will trigger the rule.

String limits are a common safety feature for many programs that expect user input. The limit prevents a possible exploit of the program code that could result from purposely overflowing the buffer area that stores the user input. GB also removes extra consecutive spaces in inputs.
It's unfortunate because there is no way to format a post, GB does not accept html other than a url and no graphics. All that plus no decent search system and only displaying the most recent ~400 posts makes me think that GB does not really want too much posting or user to user communication as much as displaying prices.
As to the link (repeats) posted by maxstar, why hasn't that user and all it's aliases been blown away along with all those useless posts? I consider it a violation of the GB TOS (to use the website or it's features in a way that interferes with the operation of the site) regardless that those posts are in JFF.

"If you mean the one in maxstar's link, it seems it's already in JFF. If you mean the topic we're currently posting to, I see no grounds for that."
Yes I mean this one. What does this have to do with "Talk Back To Us"? Who posts 79 identical characters in a row in any category but JFF? And honestly, who cares?

Actually, it still is any long string of non-blank characters. CK's observation was just a special case of it.

It used to be that any string of 80 or more characters without a space would result in “text deleted.” This meant that many URLs were not allowed, forcing folks to use tinyurl.com if they wanted to post a link to a long URL. I suspect that a programming update changed it from any 80-character string to an 80-same-character string. Why such a rule is necessary at all eludes me.

Actually, they seem to be three incarnations of a single person.

If you mean the one in maxstar's link, it seems it's already in JFF. If you mean the topic we're currently posting to, I see no grounds for that.

Well, this should be in the same category as those other moronic topics.
Moderators please move this to JFF.

I was going to ask why would anyone want to/need to/feel the need to post more than 79 identical characters in a row but thpen I checked the link maxstar posted.
I'm fascinated by three members' posting.

I'm not sure what's worse; the points to posts ratio, or simply the inane repeititious posting.
Not that I75at7AM's repeated posts and containing the repeated posting of the number "42" is any better, but at least I75at7AM has posted gas prices. That's not, however, justification for the inane posting.
Somewhere along the way, the moderators need to do something with those members and that thread, but I don't want to appear like I'm imposing my will suggesting anything like that.

That still would not stop topics like that below from being "discussed", but it would be nice if it did. Hard to believe server space is wasted saving that stuff.

Do you have something to post 80x or more in a row?
